2016 Kia Optima Earns IIHS Top Safety Pick 

For the first time ever, the 2016 Kia Optima has been named one of the top safety vehicles through the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. For being one of the safest vehicles on the road, the Optima also was given the award for “superior” in the front crash prevention test.

The Optima scored the highest score of “good”, in the following crash tests:

Small overlap front

Moderate overlap front


Roof strength

Head restraints & seats

The IIHS Crash Testers observed that the driver’s survival space was reasonably maintained during the crash test. Due to the dummy’s well controlled movement, there was low risk of any substantial injuries.

The redesigned Kia Optima now offers other safety features such as, front and rear head curtain airbags, front seat- mounted torso airbags, driver knee airbag, rollover sensor, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, tire pressure monitoring system, rear child- safety door locks, internal emergency trunk release and daytime running lights.

The 2016 Optima also offers the LATCH system, which provides attachments for child restraints. The LATCH system is intended to provide an easier, but yet correct, installation for forward and rear facing car seats.

2016 Kia Optima Earns NHTSA Five-Star Crash Rating

The 2016 Kia Optima earned the top score of five stars for overall safety from the governments National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). As well as receiving a top score of good and overall superior from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Making this vehicle one of the 2016 Top Safety Pick+ and giving you and your family safety, and peace of mind while on the road.

The safety crash tests conducted by NHTSA included frontal crash, side crash, and rollover. Leaving IIHS to test the 2016 Kia Optima in small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side safety, roof strength, head restraints and seats.

During rollover crash testing, it was concluded that there is only a 9.8% risk of rollover.

The Kia Optima was redesigned for the 2016 model year, having safety, comfortability, and modern luxury as top priorities in the design structure.

The structure was reinforced at the junction between the door sill and hinge pillar to improve occupant protection in small overlap crashes. Allowing the driver space to be well maintained with the maximum intrusion of the lower interior of 14 cm at the lower hinge pillar. Leaving the upper interior intrusion measuring at 9-11 cm at the hinge pillar and instrument panel.

Kia made sure to include more moderate, yet equally necessary safety features such as side airbags, a rollover sensor, driver knee airbag, electronic stability control, antilock brakes, and daytime running lights.
